The brand Sultana was used as early as 1925, originally being a brand of yarn, and later in 1940, Bucilla (Burhard Ulman Inc.) expanded their trademark on Sultana to include various kinds of needlecraft kits. More details about Sultana history are at the end of this page.

The Sultana brand felt and needlework kits were particularly popular in the 70s and early 80s, and sold at a variety of retail stores before the brand was retired in the early 80s. Many different retailers carried Sultana kits including LeeWards, Herrschners, Wal-Mart, Target, Micheals, K-mart ayr-way, etc. Most (or maybe all?) Sultana kits were reprints of popular Bucilla kits.

The newest Sultana kits made were branded as Gallery of Stitches and clearly marked Sultana as a trademark of Bucilla Co, shortly before changing the marketing on Gallery of Stitches to the Bucilla branding. The numbering of the kits runs continuously from the Sultana numbering into the gallery of stiches numbering.

Sultana Brand History

Sultana was originally trademarked (71377679) by Fleisher Yarns of New York in 1936, after having been used as for branding for “yarns for needlework” since 1925. Ownership of this trademark was reassigned to Bernhard Ulman Co. Inc. in 1961. I have not done adequate research to determine the relationship between Fleisher Yarns and Bucilla, but there clearly is one, as later updates to the trademark are under various Bucilla brand owners. (This trademark expired and was not renewed in 1997).

In 1940 Bernhard Ulman Co. Inc (who you may remember as the BUCI letters of Bucilla), registered the trademark (71429147) of Sultana as used for “Art Needlework Foundation Material Consisting of Suitably Cut Pieces of Textile Fabrics Provided with Designs Thereon, or Otherwise Partly Completed, and Intended for Completion by the Customer, Sold Either Separately or in So-Called Art Needlework Package Outfits, or Otherwise in Combination with Yarns and Other Art Needlework Supplies to Be Used by the Customer in Completing the Art Needlework Product” (First use 1940, trademark canceled in 2001)

In 1945, Sultana Products Inc. (of 422 Broome St. New York), applied for an additional trademark (71485249) category of “INSTRUCTION BOOKS RELATING TO ART NEEDLEWORK AND INSTRUCTION CHARTS OR SHEETS CONTAINING DESIGNS FOR EMBROIDERY” with this use category having been used since 1940. (This trademark expired and was not renewed in 1992)
