Party Favors

Party Favor Bags

Since you can’t just go to party city and buy anything with a minecraft theme (or at least you couldn’t when we threw this party), we had to make out own party favor bags. You can get plain green paper favor bags at party city but my goodness, they cost 79 cents per bag for the smallest size…each…and we had a big guest list and needed 20-30 bags. We printed pasted various minecraft character faces to paper lunchbags and tied them shut with ribbon and a hole punch.

Minecraft Mini-Coloring Book

To make sure we had somethng really following our theme we made mini-coloring books (quarter page size). 16 pages when finished, each coloring book requires two sheets of paper (I suggest printing on a duplexing lazer printer if possible so you don’t have to manually duplex) which you cut in half horizontally and then fold into a book and staple with a long-reach stapler.

Minecraft Crayons

A nice accessory to go with the minecraft coloring books. Labels applied to the party favor crayon boxes show the different color dyes and crafting recipes corresponding to the included crayon colors.

We couldn’t find plain party favor crayon box packs at Party City so we decided to redecorate Thomas party favor crayons into Minecraft Crayons with stickers since train tracks and minecart tracks are basically the same thing. It would have been nice to start with “plain” party favor crayons though, because the individual crayons did have thomas printed on the wrappers (oops), but we didn’t have time to track down plain crayon favor packs or re-wrap the individual crayons with custom wrappers.

Cookie Party Favors

We made & printed labels with a cookie crafting recipe and attached them to oreo cookie two-packs. Famous Amos or home-made chocolate chip cookies might be more authentic than oreos.

Label Printing Tip: Look in your printer settings for paper type of Label (or if Label isn’t a choice, perhaps transparency). Printing on a color laser printer the ink may flake off easily when printed on “plain paper” mode.

Fishing Themed Party Favors

We applied these labels about fishing to fish shaped fruit snacks (Finding Dory fruit snacks), but these labels could be used equally well with Goldfish Crackers or other “fish” themed toys or treats. Obviously not every type of treasure or junk is included on the label. We ended up trimming off the border on the labels to fit the snack package size better. For Goldfish snack bags, they could be left on.

Party Games

Furniture Dolly Mine-Carts

We built two minecarts to have races around the park. We took a furniture dolly from the hardware store, and built a wooden box frame to rest on top of the dolly. We added a seat to make it more comfortable to propel. You drive it pretty much the same way as a little tykes car–by walking it with your feet.

Minecraft Bow & Arrow Game

We took a large dry erase board (because that was less expensive than plywood) and drilled various size holes to place targets, and built the rest of the A-frame out of 1×2 wood. We took foam-board and glued pictures of minecraft enemies on them. We taped some medium strength magnets on the back of the target boards, and used duct tape to attach a large washer to the top of each target for magnetic targets. Then using a foam-tipped bow, kids could shoot at the targets and knock them down if their aim was good. If you don’t use strong enough magnets, the targets will fall off if you hit the board anywhere, too strong and the targets won’t fall down when hit.

Creeper-Creeper-Zombie

Play like duck duck goose, but use creepers and zombies as the characters instead.

Minecraft Pinata

Minecraft pinatas aren’t something you can just pick up anywhere, so we ventured into making our own. Supplies included a cardboard box from the UPS store, crepe paper, 5-bladed herb shears from target, hot glue, a large zip tie, and a box knife. The letters I printed on the printer and glued on. The herb shears give the nice fringy-look by making close together cuts quickly for a pro look, but if you’re patient, you could certainly make those same cuts with regular scissors. The most important thing to keep in mind is correguated cardboard is hard to break with a stick, adding large slashes in the box to pre-weaken it is a must if you don’t want the game to take hours to play. We started out with 1″ slashes on our practice/protype pinata, and ended up going with 5″ slashes (across the grain of the corregation) on the final pinata.
