Assembly of the Tabernacle

Concerning

What the Lord Commanded

What Moses Did

Exo 40:1 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, Exo 40:16 Thus Moses did; according to all that the LORD had commanded him, so he did .
Timeframe

Assembly of Tabernacle

Exo 40:2 “On the first day of the first month you shall set up the tabernacle of the tent of meeting . Exo 40:17 Now in the first month of the second year, on the first day of the month, the tabernacle was erected.

Exo 40:18 Moses erected the tabernacle and laid its sockets, and set up its boards, and inserted its bars and erected its pillars.

Exo 40:19 He spread the tent over the tabernacle and put the covering of the tent on top of it, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Ark of the Testimony

Veil screening Ark

Exo 40:3 “You shall place the ark of the testimony there, and you shall screen the ark with the veil . Exo 40:20 Then he took the testimony and put it into the ark , and attached the poles to the ark, and put the mercy seat on top of the ark.

Exo 40:21 He brought the ark into the tabernacle , and set up a veil for the screen , and screened off the ark of the testimony, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Table (of Showbread)

Items on table (bread)

Lampstand

Exo 40:4 “You shall bring in the table and arrange what belongs on it ; and you shall bring in the lampstand and mount its lamps . Exo 40:22 Then he put the table in the tent of meeting on the north side of the tabernacle, outside the veil.

Exo 40:23 He set the arrangement of bread in order on it before the LORD,just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Exo 40:24 Then he placed the lampstand in the tent of meeting, opposite the table, on the south side of the tabernacle.

Exo 40:25 He lighted the lamps before the LORD, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Gold Altar (Altar of Incense)

Veil for doorway of tabernacle

Exo 40:5 “Moreover, you shall set the gold altar of incense before the ark of the testimony, and set up the veil for the doorway to the tabernacle . Exo 40:26 Then he placed the gold altar in the tent of meeting in front of the veil;

Exo 40:27 and he burned fragrant incense on it, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Exo 40:28 Then he set up the veil for the doorway of the tabernacle .

Altar of burnt offering (Bronze Altar) Exo 40:6 “You shall set the altar of burnt offering in front of the doorway of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting. Exo 40:29 He set the altar of burnt offering before the doorway of the tabernacle of the tent of meeting, and offered on it the burnt offering and the meal offering, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.
(Bronze) Laver Exo 40:7 “You shall set the laver between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it . Exo 40:3 0 He placed the laver between the tent of meeting and the altar and put water in it for washing.

Exo 40:3 1 From it Moses and Aaron and his sons washed their hands and their feet.

Exo 40:3 2 When they entered the tent of meeting, and when they approached the altar, they washed, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

Court(yard)

Veil of Gateway

Exo 40:8 “You shall set up the court all around and hang up the veil for the gateway of the court. Exo 40:3 3 He erected the court all around the tabernacle and the altar, and hung up the veil for the gateway of the court. Thus Moses finished the work.

The phrase “ just as the LORD had commanded Moses” appears SEVEN times in this chapter (in regards to construction of the tabernacle), and 7 times in the previous chapter (in regards to construction of the priestly garments).

The Anointing

Exo 40:9 “Then you shall take the anointing oil and anoint the tabernacle and all that is in it, and shall consecrate it and all its furnishings; and it shall be holy. 10 “You shall anoint the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and consecrate the altar, and the altar shall be most holy. 11 “You shall anoint the laver and its stand, and consecrate it. 12 “Then you shall bring Aaron and his sons to the doorway of the tent of meeting and wash them with water. 13 “You shall put the holy garments on Aaron and anoint him and consecrate him, that he may minister as a priest to Me. 14 “You shall bring his sons and put tunics on them; 15 and you shall anoint them even as you have anointed their father, that they may minister as priests to Me; and their anointing will qualify them for a perpetual priesthood throughout their generations.”

Why would this paragraph not be repeated in the section on how Moses did exactly what the Lord commanded? What parts of it were repeated? Which portions were not?

(All) Other anointings in Exodus:

Exo 28:41 “You shall put [tunics, sashes, and caps] on Aaron your brother and on his sons with him; and you shall anoint them and ordain them and consecrate them, that they may serve Me as priests.

Exo 29:1-9 NASB “Now this is what you shall do to them to consecrate them to minister as priests to Me: […] (5-6) [You shall put the garments on Aaron and] (7) “Then you shall take the anointing oil and pour it on his head and anoint him. (8) “You shall bring his sons and put tunics on them. (9) “You shall gird them with sashes, Aaron and his sons, and bind caps on them, and they shall have the priesthood by a perpetual statute So you shall ordain Aaron and his sons.

Exo 29:35-36 NASB “Thus you shall do to Aaron and to his sons, according to all that I have commanded you; you shall ordain them through seven days. (36) “Each day you shall offer a bull as a sin offering for atonement, and you shall purify the altar when you make atonement for it, and you shall anoint it to consecrate it.

Exo 30:25-33 NASB “You shall make of these a holy anointing oil, a perfume mixture, the work of a perfumer; it shall be a holy anointing oil. (26) “With it you shall anoint the tent of meeting and the ark of the testimony, (27) and the table and all its utensils, and the lampstand and its utensils, and the altar of incense, (28) and the altar of burnt offering and all its utensils, and the laver and its stand. (29) “You shall also consecrate them, that they may be most holy; whatever touches them shall be holy. (30) “You shall anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister as priests to Me. (31) “You shall speak to the sons of Israel, saying, ‘This shall be a holy anointing oil to Me throughout your generations. (32) ‘It shall not be poured on anyone’s body, nor shall you make any like it in the same proportions; it is holy, and it shall be holy to you. (33) ‘Whoever shall mix any like it or whoever puts any of it on a layman shall be cut off from his people.'”

Result :

Exo 40:34 Then the cloud covered the tent of meeting, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 35 Moses was not able to enter the tent of meeting because the cloud had settled on it, and the glory of the LORD filled the tabernacle. 36 Throughout all their journeys whenever the cloud was taken up from over the tabernacle, the sons of Israel would set out; 37 but if the cloud was not taken up, then they did not set out until the day when it was taken up.38 For throughout all their journeys, the cloud of the LORD was on the tabernacle by day, and there was fire in it by night, in the sight of all the house of Israel.

Keep in mind the children of Israel are in the desert where it is very cold at night and hot during the day. Cloud by day and fire by night would make their environment more comfortable.
